From the Cabin to the Emergency Room and Everything In-Between

Image
To say that this has been an eventful beginning to our vacation is COMPLETELY an understatement.  It has been crazy!  This past Friday, we packed up our stuff in the Suburban, gave our garage door opener to our house-sitter and headed down the road toward our vacation destination: Dent, MN (in case you weren't aware, Dent is a truly podink little town not far from the podink little town where I grew up). Actually, that isn't completely true.  On Friday, we headed to my mom's house in Ottertail, then on Sunday we came to our vacation destination in Dent.  I stand self-corrected. Regardless, between Friday and now things have been crazy.  We have gone to my grandma's 89th birthday party, done a lot of fishing and swimming in the lake, I went to Detroit Lakes and had my hair done by a long time friend (and I really love it!), we've prepared, eaten and cleaned up from meals, spent time talking and playing cards, and took one very scary trip to the Emergency Room...

It feels like it has been a very long journey, but in reality it lasted only a mere month before we received our answer.  My darling baby boy is now fever free, and I'm still having a hard time believing the cause.  According to blood tests that were done, Ethan has a "very severe peanut allergy" (those words being a direct quote from his doctor).  I couldn't fathom how a peanut allergy could be causing his fevers, especially considering the fact that he isn't old enough to eat anything but baby food! Once we took extreme steps to contain the peanuts in our home (those steps being making sure that the counter is wiped down each and every time my kids make a peanut butter sandwich on them, making sure that the kids wash their hands and brush their teeth any time they eat peanut butter, making sure we only wipe Ethan with clean paper towels instead of a wash rag, etc), his fevers have gone away completely!  I found it really hard to believe, and really hard to gra...

This past weekend was a really really LONG one.  You see, my husband was out of town on a fishing trip with some of his guy friends.  This left me home alone with five fabulous kids (which I truly am not complaining about - I gave Monte the go-ahead to schedule the trip!). The catch?  My baby is STILL sick.  It all started almost three weeks ago.  He was running a low-grade fever at his six-month appointment, so he never got his vaccinations.  The problem is that the low-grade fevers have not stopped.  I think, of the past three weeks, he has had a total of 36 hours of being fever-free.  It has been a hard road for my little guy and for his mama!  So, on Friday, I made an appointment to have him seen at his doctor's office yet again.  Talk about hard appointments to get through, this one was the worst!  They had to use a catheter on him to collect a urine sample (which he did NOT like one bit!).  They also had to draw some bl...

We love sporting goods stores.  I'm not kidding, we love them.  Whether we're looking for equipment for softball, soccer or baseball, or just searching out some new fishing gear, we always have a great time in a sporting goods store! You can, too!  BlogHer and Gatorade are sponsoring a giveaway on my review blog.  The prize?  A $100 Gift Card to Dick's Sporting Goods.  I think we could all use a little more sports equipment in our lives! Spontaneity at its Best

We planned it on Monday.  Or maybe it was Tuesday.  Regardless, we planned this trip earlier in the week and somehow managed to keep it a secret from most of our family and friends.  We lined up a babysitter.  We lined up a flight.  We finally found what we've been slowly searching for and made the decision to pursue. Saturday morning my alarm went off at 3:30am.  Considering the fact that the prior night was a night of interrupted sleep for me (due to my sweet baby deciding that the middle of the night was a good time to want to eat and play!), I was not too thrilled with the timing of my waking. I dragged my tired butt out of bed and got ready for the day.  At 4:30am, completely ready to go, I went and woke baby (since he had already been "complaining" a little bit for the past hour).  Changed his diaper.  Fed him a bottle.  Cuddled him back to sleep.  I was still holding him when Holly (our babysitter) arrived at our house at...

I just tried to log into Blogger, as I haven’t posted an update to my blog in awhile.   Upon clicking the link, I received a message stating “Blogger is currently unavailable.   We apologize for this interruption in service.” So, here I am, writing out this blog post in Word with the intent to post it when Blogger becomes available again.   The irony of Blogger's unavailability is the fact that I feel like that could be MY status message lately. “Kami is currently unavailable.   She apologizes for the interruption in one-on-one time.” Life has been BUSY.   In a home with five children, this is never a new thing.   In the spring, however, our normal busy takes on a whole new level.   This spring Claire has been in softball, Iain has been in baseball and soccer, and Ellis has been in soccer.   To say that keeping up with our sports schedule can be overwhelming is a huge UNDERstatement.   Getting our kids to and from practices and games, arra...
